    schol·ar ( P ) Pronunciation Key (sklr)
    n.

    A learned person.
A specialist in a given branch of knowledge: a classical scholar.
One who attends school or studies with a teacher; a student.
A student who holds or has held a particular scholarship.

Why does a scholar have to be a master of arcane writing? Can't he simply be learned in the lore, history, and academics of the world?
